- The closest game farms in the Magaliesberg start about 80 km from central Johannesburg — roughly an hour's drive on the N14. The Bronkhorstspruit area to the east is similar. Both are practical for a Friday-night arrival.
- Most do not. The farms close to Joburg and Pretoria stock plains game — impala, zebra, wildebeest, kudu, and warthog. Lion and leopard are rare on day-visitor-friendly properties. For Big Five you generally need to go to Limpopo or Mpumalanga.
- Winter (May to August) is the most comfortable. The bush is dry and open, game is easier to spot near water, and the nights are cold enough for a fire. Summer gets very hot and afternoon thunderstorms are frequent, but the valley is green and birdlife is excellent.
