Camping & 4x4 in Eastern Cape
Quick answer
The Eastern Cape spans Addo's elephant country, the Wild Coast, Tsitsikamma, and the Karoo interior. SANParks manages most of the best sites. The Wild Coast is remote and basic; Addo and Tsitsikamma are well-serviced. Star visibility in the Karoo is exceptional.
Frequently asked questions
- Most of the Wild Coast proper is not accessible with a standard caravan. The roads are gravel or tracks, often steep and narrow. The camps at Coffee Bay and Port St Johns have vehicle access but the sites are basic. A roof tent on a 4x4 is the more practical format here.
- Yes. Addo fills up over school holidays and long weekends. SANParks bookings open months in advance. Midweek camping outside peak season is generally available with one to two weeks notice.
