Kamp & 4x4 in Northern Cape
Quick answer
The Northern Cape is South Africa's best province for dark-sky camping. The Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park is the highlight — red dunes, predators, and well-run SANParks camps. Namaqualand bursts with wildflowers in spring. The Richtersveld is extreme 4x4 territory.
Frequently asked questions
- The main flower season is late July to mid-September, peaking in August. The exact timing varies year to year depending on winter rainfall. SANParks and the Namaqua National Park website publish real-time updates as the season develops.
- The main roads between the camps (Twee Rivieren, Mata Mata, Nossob) are gravel and passable in a standard 2WD vehicle with reasonable clearance. The wilderness camps and some camp-to-camp routes require a 4x4 with sand recovery gear. Check the current road reports before booking.
